James M Loots has been practicing law for more than 20 years and is a recognized and respected advocate of the interests of associations, small business and individuals, particularly on employment law issues.  With decades of experience working for at large firms for large clients, he has chosen to devote his attentions to the personalized needs of small business based in and around Washington, DC.

About James M Loots PC

Jim is the past chair of the D.C. Commission on Human Rights, and was selected in 1986 as the D.C. Bar’s Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year.  He has served on the Board of Directors of the Washington Legal Counsel for the Elderly, the Capitol Hill Association of Merchants and Professionals.

A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he received his undergraduate degree in Journalism from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.  After spending a year working as a Vista Volunteer in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he attended the University of Michigan Law School, where he served on the editorial board of the Michigan Law Review.  He graduated cum laude in 1984, after which he moved to Washington, D.C.







His professional work has earned  him the highest possible “A-V” rating from the Martindale-Hubbell legal directory, as well as listings in “Who’s Who in American Law” and “Who’s Who in America.”

He routinely reviews and prepares commentary concerning proposed legislation and regulations affecting employers on a local, regional, or national basis, and is active in many legal organizations related to employment and labor law issues. 

Jim has been featured and quoted on emerging employment law issues on CNN, Fox News, the Washington Times, Mode Magazine, and the syndicated Nation’s Business Today.  He is  also the author of a recurring column on legal employment issues in Restaurant Digest.

He is a former board member of the Capitol Hill Association of Merchants and  Professionals, and the Public Affairs Committee of the Greater Washington Board of Trade. He is a member of the  Society for Human Resource Management, the National Employment Lawyers Association, National Restaurant Association, and American Hotel & Lodging Association.

An adjunct instructor of law at the American University Washington College of Law, he has published numerous articles on the law in both the professional and popular press.

 

Jim’s current practice concentrates on issues affecting small and mid-sized businesses, including employment, union issues, litigation, and administrative law.  Jim is admitted to practice in numerous trial and appellate federal courts (including the United States Tax Court and the Court of Federal Claims), as well as in the courts of the District of Columbia.
